See What We're Doing Sunday: No Carb Zone

Hi everyone! I've already finished 1 of my September goals since I posted them yesterday - can you guess which one? :) I will write a goal recap story at the beginning of each month whenever I announce our new goals.

To go along with the themes I have for our blog posts, I thought this was the perfect time to share that Heath and I are going carb free for the week… well, kinda. We have this lonesome can of organic black beans in the pantry, so we're going to eat it. I also read an article where wine contains carbs from unfermented sugars, but whatever.

I like to start the grocery week (typically on Sundays) with little to nothing in our fridge and pantry (besides meat) so I know we are eating fresh items. We've tried the meal prep thing a week in advance, and it just wasn't for us. We found that we didn't like much of the food towards the end of the week because it wasn't as fresh. Different strokes for different folks.

We actually decided to do this before Labor Day Weekend, but there was NO way we were going to succeed going out of town and being around such good food. Although we eat healthy at home, we never want to be an inconvenience to other people (even when it's family!) to try to accommodate our eating habits. If my mother-in-law is going to make Pioneer Woman's sheet cake, then you better believe I'm going to be eating it no. matter. what.

So here we are… It's Sunday and a start to the new week of not going out of town. Great time to finally go a week without carbs.

Before you start telling me that carbs are good for you, Heath and I aren't doing this to restrict ourselves or go carb-free forever. I, for one, could not live if that were the case. We've never been one for long, drawn out challenges so we just decided to challenge ourselves to do something for the week just to see. The crazy thing is the only main carb we've been eating at home is quinoa, considering I just bought a 5 lb. bag of it. We don't do rice here at the McKays and, a few months ago, we were into sweet potatoes.

I write down our meals for the week, so here is a glance of what we are having. I try my best to make dinners last for lunch the next day to be more cost-effective and not waste food. Also, we finally take our anniversary pictures tomorrow evening so we are going to go out to eat after (something we usually only do once a week unless we have company).

As I've been filling these sheets out for awhile, I've learned not to fill in the weekends until the week is closer to ending because, without a doubt, there is always food leftover, my parents invite us over for dinner or something changes with the meal plan. And God forbid if I have to scratch over my writing!

Other things we're up to this week:
  • Heath started practicing with his flag football team for the church league
  • Heath's first sport at the Y also started this weekend so he has a t-shirt tan from overseeing all the tackle football games
  • Community Group started back up two weeks ago and we've been studying the book of Acts
  • GrapeFest starts this Thursday, but we're expecting rain
  • I'm volunteering at my church's Meal Marathon on Saturday (and you should come with me if you're close!)
  • Sons of Anarchy premieres on Tuesday, which only Heath is excited about
  • I'll still be drinking wine
Sunday morning run (more like a jog/walk for me…)
The first meal for No Carb Zone week
Anyways, I'm interested to see if we will even see the difference in our no carb meals, and if we even complete the whole week :) Stay tuned!

Until next time,
